Skończenie / Becoming Horse, 2026
spatial object, polypropylene bags, sewing, textile elements, 250 x 200 x 150 cm
Becoming Horse was created as part of the exhibition Konie Hazard, whose point of departure was the history of a site formerly associated with horse-racing betting, as well as the curatorial concept of an uncanny stable built from scraps, waste, and found materials. The work was made from polypropylene bags — a material recurrent in my practice, associated with temporariness, construction, and provisional forms of covering. The Polish title, Skończenie, is based on a wordplay: it refers both to an ending and to the fantasy of “becoming a horse”.
The object takes the form of a hybrid — a horse’s head with a body and a mermaid-like tail, accompanied by two spatial stars. Initially, the work was intended to capture a moment of winning: a brief, visually intense burst of joy associated with the aesthetics of jackpots and games of chance. Ultimately, instead of pure euphoria, what appears is its material trace — a provisional, stitched body after a metamorphosis, suspended between triumph, waste, trance-like experience, and the ambiguous promise of happiness.
